I picked up the graphic novel of V for Vendetta today and I have to wonder about something. It's a great story, fascinating and some very good things to chew on mentally. But something I have to wonder how, "in this day and age" -- newspeak for "with continual worry about terrorists, as well as movement against anti-nationalist and anarchist speech" -- the producers of the movie have any hope in portraying the movie in any way similar to how the graphic novel is.

Blah. Hollywood is going to butcher it six ways to Sunday and most people will be none the wiser. Which is a crying shame. That's how it's going to be shown.

I'm not really certain where "movement against anti-nationalist and anarchist speech" exists. If anything, it's the opposite.

Thinking about it, I tried to do a search for examples of what I meant, where it was socially unacceptable to speak out against this government or government in general, and overall, I was surprised at how prevailant sites speaking out against the government/administration were. There didn't seem to be much about the actual curtailing of free speech rights. (Well... unless you count so-called Free Speech Zones. I thought I had read about several court cases regarding federal and local authorities clamping down on free speech, but they might have been more related to the Free Speech Zone fiascoes.) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_speech_zones)

Thinking more on it, then, I guess it's not surprising that a film with such an anti-authoritarian, anarchic viewpoint is being produced. Though I'm not entirely certain that it's going to be quite the same as the original. No movie made from a comic/graphic novel/book/what-have-you ever is, of course, but... well, I think you get what I mean.

I have no idea what the book is about, but my expectation would be that it's anarchic views were universal in the book, whereas the movie is going to simply be anti-US. It may sound pessimistic, but Hollywood doesn't fail to disappoint in this regard.

On an unrelated note, I have heard of movies being produced that present the terrorists as good guys...
