Okay, just a quick update. Thanks to a very good friend, I am borrowing a dialup connection but I don't want to hog it. So I'll keep this quick-ish.

My most recent trouble ticket with Verizon -- to wit, "Please get my DSL connection working again, okay-I-love-you-buh-bye!" -- was closed earlier today because I am 1850 feet from the Central Office. Or something to that effect. The ticket has been re-opened, and I will be getting a callback from them this Friday. Greybunny, I think I am starting to feel something of how you felt wen you went through that trials of EDVO a few months ago.

Anyway, I have a feeling that this will work out reasonably well. I am not going back to that mockery of service that Time-Warner was, which means that if they say my DSL was imaginary then I'll be looking at other options for the time being. If it comes to it, I really hope ISDN in my area isn't as expensive as it used to be way back in the dark ages of broadband, though part of me would actually look forward to breaking out the coal-fired modem.

Anyway! More updates as they come in. Pax.

EVDO wasn't my problem, I was looking at it as a possible solution to my problem which was bad cable internet.

This isn't the first story I've heard of somebody getting DSL, having it work for a while, then being told that DSL isn't available in their area/at their distance from the CO/to houses painted that color. The telecommunications industry in this country is both ludicrously incompetent and verging on the Kafka-esque; I'd say that the companies involved would never survive in any other industry, except that there aren't many industries where anybody seems to be able to find their ass with both hands these days.

To be honest, I don't know why companies even have customer service departments anymore. It's not like the money from any one customer is going to make a difference one way or the other, and they're all careful to stay as bad as each other so there's noplace for customers to run to.

Your post appears on my friends page right above another about very much the same thing, so I've been brooding on the subject tonight.

Ah, my mistake. Though I was considering EVDO as a replacement for this, the only major carrier in this area who isn't Sprint is... Verizon Wireless. It seems almost twisted to do that. Plus I get pretty lousy signal accross the board in my area.

I'm pretty sure they're going to say 'Tough luck, guy' and just refuse to get DSL going for me again on that half-arsed excuse of 'You're too far from the CO.' (Then why did it work BEFORE?) Then I'll have to consider my options.
