Lazy Monday Movies Review
May. 1st, 2006 08:31 pmJust got done watching both Aeon Flux and Nochnoy Dozor, AKA Night Watch. I really wish I'd seen this movie in the theater. More on that later, though.
Lately we've had an innundation of "Trinity clone" movies, i.e. movies where the female lead is some sort of superhuman killer badass. Bloodrayne, Ultraviolet, and Aeon Flux. Flux at least seemed to be a bit of a cut above the others. It was definitely different from the old animated series but then again the animated series wasn't much to go on anyway. Overall it wasn't too bad, it made for some decent eye candy. There's a story in there somewhere though it seemed a bit drawn out; it could have been told in one hour, I think. That being said, what story was in there was quite interesting. While the Plot Twist was kind of dubious it still lent it a more interesting and intriguing air about it than the twist of Ultraviolet. UV was pure eye-candy; AF was eye candy with a nice story in there somewhere.
Now, Night Watch. As some of you might remember I wanted to see this movie a few weeks ago when I had some days off, but it was no longer playing. Well, through the magic of the Internet (with some help from ebay) I not only scored Night Watch but also the sequel, Day Watch. I just watched Night Watch and overall I'm very happy and pleased. It's a good story and a lot of funky visuals -- I can definitely see the big budget at work, but at the same time unlike a lot of movies, the visuals don't get in the way of the story.
Unfortunately, if you've seen the trailer, you've seen just about all the cool visuals. On the plus side, that's not a bad thing; there's still some good story in there. I am highly recommending you see this movie in the original Russian with English subtitles. I don't know if the theatrical release in the US was dubbed or subbed but if you can, choose Russian.
Not much else. This was my one day off for the next... 7 days or so. Bleh. Pax.
