Okay, first off: Computer works now. Jon will remain sane for the time being so long as nothing worse happens. Damfino if I know what happened. But it might be a hint that I need to Do Something.

Secondly, found this in the AP story about the new pope:

Ratzinger served John Paul II since 1981 as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In that position, he has disciplined church dissidents and upheld church policy against attempts by liberals for reforms.

For those of you who don't know, 'the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith' is the current name for the Office of the Holy Inquisition. Yes, I find this both amusing and disturbing at the same time. ^^ Though to be fair, the Inquisition ain't what it used to be, and I'm pretty certain that this guy is no Torquemada. He's just a hardliner. I think with his choice of pontifical name -- Benedict -- and this history of the last pontiff with that name, he may be realizing that he's in a position where being a hardliner is not all that good a thing. (Considering he's 78, I think he also knows that his stay is not going to be terribly long.)

Anyway, since I'm not Catholic, this is pretty much a footnote in my life, but of course it'll be interesting to see what happens. Just wanted to hold a keg o'flammable liquid out to folks. ^^
