Not many Real-Time Strategy games break the mold. There's Homeworld of course which is an award-winner in its own right. But then there was something totally oddball that just had to work. That game was Dungeon Keeper.

Despite a very well-done sequel, this particular sub-genre has never taken off too well. (It could be argued that Tropico could fall into this category.) And of course all plans for a DK3 were scrapped early on; and Bullfrog is, sadly, no more. The idea of playing the "bad guy" and making the lives of the good guys miserable for some reason never caught on. Or maybe there were only just so many ways you could do it. It looks like Elixer Games has managed it with their upcoming title Evil Genius.

Okay, take the tongue-in-cheek humor of and basic premise of Dungeon Keeper. Add in some retro-esque visual and audio themes from the 70's superspy films (and not only the Bond franchise but also Our Man Flint, and don't get me started on Austin Powers if you want this review to remain remotely on-topic!) that were done quite well in No One Lives Forever. And there you have Evil Genius: build your secret lair, recruit minions, build traps, defend it against the good-guy infiltrators, await the inevitable coming of the superspy, and achieve various goals such as, oh, I don't know, world domination.

I don't know why, but games like this and Dungeon Keeper are just a lot more fun for me than the usual fare. Maybe it's the irreverent humor, maybe it's the allure of playing an amoral yet presumably well-written villain, or maybe it's just because it's such a twist on 'traditional themes.'

The demo is out there, and it seems to be equivalent to a very small Dungeon Keeper map. There are a number of very humorous touches. (It's worth downloading just to see one of the guards interrogating a prisoner. No, really, it's not disturbing or shocking at all, it's just hilarious.) No real voice acting -- aside from the indispensible Number Two they all seem to speak a (variant evil) dialect of Simese -- but that doesn't hurt it at all. At about 200 megs it's light as demos go these days and you'll feel it, but it's quite a nice taste of the full game if they can add more content to it. That'll decide wether it goes the way of Startopia or if it'll be the next Dungeon Keeper.

My recommendation: pull it down, it's worth that much of a look at least. Get the full game? If they can give it a lot of content and interesting challenges and twists (for example, none of the traps are in the demo) then it'll be a good consideration if you're on a budget, and a definite buy if you're not hindered by financial issues.

That game (Dungeon Keeper) is on my Games To Play Again Soon. I liked the original 2D game more than the original, but they're both enjoyable.

The original DID seem to be a bit more flexible than the second. Slightly more open-ended.

A game you may want to look into is Ghostmaster which is a delightful little game where you control a bunch of ghosts in various maps trying to scare all the human inhabitants out, or drive them insane. It's kind of Dungeon Keeper crossed with an evil version of The Sims.

There tend to be other goals in the game, typically with the aim of freeing trapped ghosts which you later get to use, and the entire game has a good replay value and a delightfully wrong sense of humor. :)

I do really recommend this one, and have to get back into playing it. If you liked Dungeon Keeper, you'll probably like this one.

I played this on the PC, a friend of mine has tried the X-Box version and found it had been cut down so much to be usable there as to make it not worth playing. It looks like most of the customization (like choosing which ghosts you get to use) has been pulled out. Avoid.

I tried pulling down the Ghostmaster demo, but had no luck; connection reset, no connection, connection refused, that sort of fun stuff.

Pity that consoles then to shred games, though there's not a lot of customization that can be done to one.

I already have this game, plus the second one that came out. I must say it was a delight to play the first one more than the second one actually. Slapping your imps or other creatures was fun till I learn I could slap the chickens and watch them explode in a bunch of blood and feathers. The narrator of the game was funny, if you really listen to his words and such. Some freaky creatures, like the mistress who ENJOYS getting slapped.

They now sell the game cheaper than what I got it at, and I would say it is a worthwhile buy if you like the sick and twisted ways you can just abuse the good guys later on.

There was another game out there that I enjoyed, but have yet to find it or even remeber the darn title! It was very much like Sim City with a twist. You can control either heaven or hell. Yes, you had souls come in and such and depeneding on the area, you either set up areas to be punished or rewarded. And you even had disasters pop up too, like a bat outta hell.

But I have rambled enough here, and have to go off and see if I can get killed on another game. Bye! *waves*

*gasp* EEEEE! Hello! I didn't know you had an LJ. ^^ Welcome to my little corner of the insanity! ^^ Been wondering what you've been up to lately since I haven't seen you about! =)

I remember a lot of the wonderful quotes from the Narrator in DK2. "Micro-piglets have overrun your dungeon." "A new creature has entered your dungeon. Oh. No, wait, it's left again." Stayed up playing for too long and he starts making comments like, "Keeper, you know that warm, soft, comfortable thing in the next room? Yes, that's your bed...."

The game you're talking about was, I think, AfterLife, by Lucasarts. I never got the chance to play it. A shame, I heard it was pretty fun. :(

But thank you for commenting! And it was great hearing form you. EEE! ^^

I have been salivating over Evil Genius for a while now. I can't wait till it comes out and I can get myself a copy of it. When's the full version out? I can wait on Doom, and neither of the Rockstar games I wanted this season are coming out on the PC (yet). What I've read about Evil Genius so far, it looks sweet, and like it just might be one of the most fun little games ever.

September 21st is when I heard it's shipping... which means a day or two -- or a week -- later is when the stores will get it. =)
