Last night on my way to school, it was one of those nights where the air is charged with a thunderstorm's electricity, and laden with the cool promise of rain delivered to to come. A mild, warm breeze blew accross the streets, not chilly enough for a jacket but not at an inferno wind. The scent of freashly-damp loam flickered along the grassy areas. Had I been further north, it would be the kind of warm, subtly moist night that I remember the summers having been, where walking the streets of Queens or even some parts of Manhattan, or parts of New Jersey, was a pleasant time. WIndow-shopping, the occasional street fair, going to a movie, seeing what there was to see, being with people. The warm-yet-cool night air, pleasant and gentle, would make everything all right, and the kiss of the breeze would take away any of the day's weariness.

It's the kind of weather that brings to mind memories. Even as far back as when I was in the Scouts -- yes, yes, I was a Boy Scout -- the summer nights of Ten Mile River, peaeful and serene, or cheerfully raucuous with camraderie. And quieter times, the eve of the first training cruise when I was going to SUNY Maritime College and we trooped into New York, stopping at a little jazz bar called Mondo Canis, where someone who could have been James Brown's brother was singing. And other ports, other places.... Palma de Majorca, Curacao, Greece, Gibralter. And more recently, street fairs in New York, the old re-enactment group meetings that were as much gatherings as business-meetings, the midnight showings of RHPS in Riverdale. So many memories... tied up into a few minutes' standing in a certain type of weather, certain scents, certain humidity.

Anyway....

I'm afraid I'm not going to make the deadline for the project. I really did bite off more than I could chew with this, but that's all right. I'll get it right, then it'll look fine. I'm curiously unconcerned at all about it for the time being. I know I'll get it done, and I know it'll be just fine.

It figures... just as I'm about ready to get out of Flordia, NERO opens up a chapter in this area. Man, that's got to be cosmic bad timing. It's the sort of thing a lot of people keep telling me I shoudl get involved with, to go out and meet people and have a good time. I'll just have to hope that there's something of that sort wherever I go.

That's the extent of things happening now, really. It's Memorial Day weekend and I'm taking a one-day break from school stuff, but it'll be back at the computer tomorrow, getting more stuff done for this project.
