The greater evil isn't when someone does wrong to another, but when someone else does nothing to stop it.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are too scared, too self-absorbed (as you put it), or too complacent to do anything when they see wrong. And everyone's guilty of it: people see someone broken down at the side of the road, but not everyone stops to see if they're alright, assuming that help is already on the way or that someone else will take care of them.
Never hesitate to speak your mind. Sure, someone else can say you're wasting your breath. But it's your breath - not theirs. :)
