... I am now an official Nevada State Resident.

Yes, that's right. I'm a Navader. Darth Nukus is inordinately pleased with this.

As well as driving and voting in Nevada, this also means that I may now legally purchase, own, and use firearms for the first time in my life. Despair! because I certainly am! ^_^

Pax.

You know, it's comments like this that break everyone else's image that all citizens of the US own at least three times their own bodyweight in military grade firearms. (or something like that). :)

Still, congrats on another stage of the move being finished.

I don't know why people get that archetype from. Admittedly, the 'gun culture' is pretty strong in the US but there are plenty of places -- urban areas mostly -- where there are strict 'no own' gun control laws, and even in a lot of more rural places, handgun ownership is banned. And with the assault gun bans, there really are not any automatic rifles floating around out there; what confuses people, though, is that there is a considerable market for semi-automatic versions of fully automatic weapons.

Still, I'm not in any rush to get a gun. Since, well, I'm in a state full of people who possibly have guns, for the time being I think I'm reasonably safe. =)

I've not been in New York for the past month and change. The move is permanent, it wasn't temporary. Sorry for missing you!

Oh, it's a very silly archetype, but certainly a common one, and I'm not sure where it came from either. My guess is it's something to do with a mis-understanding of the Second Amendment.

The ironic thing is I know that, at least at one point, and possibly still, my home country, New Zealand, had more guns per head of population then the US. In our case, this was due to farmers and the large numbers of hunting rifles and shotguns they tended to have around.

So does a light frypan (as opposed to a light saber) count as a fire arm? ;)

Cowboys and wild stories of the Wild West, perhaps? ;)

We've got ourselves a cowboy.

I think modern Hollywood has more to do with it, that and the image that Texas in particular seems to be trying to put across at times. :)

I'm honestly trying to think back to where I got this idea from. I just know it's one of those 'things' that a lot of US people, especially in the southern part, are very into guns.

I've always assumed it's about as accurate as the thing about all people in New Zealand being sheep-farmers. :)

Re "modern Hollywood," that's why I mentioned wild stories of the wild West.

Re all people in New Zealand being sheep-farmers... *innocent blink-blink* You mean you're not?!

*stifled giggle* ;)
