It's Semi-Official....
Apr. 7th, 2005 07:52 pm... at least for me, anyway:
The "big fight scene" in King Fu Hustle is a heck of a lot more fun than Matric Reloaded's "burly brawl."
So, after visiting the Shrine of Otherwise Impossible To Find Movies, I have the following to report:
Legend of Zu Mountain: Gorgeous, but I can see why it was kind of panned. The pacing is kind of uneven but the special effects and CGI are lavish. A little confusing in parts and I get the feeling that this would have made a better miniseries. The 'cracking porcelain' shots of King Sky's teacher were lovely.
Kung Fu Hustle: Fun film, very over-the-top visually and a bit slapstick but still a heck of a lot of fun. Only some blood but not buckets of it. Violent in places but as it's so over-the-top you'd never confuse this movie with Reservoir Dogs. You may have seen Miramax advertising this film lately. Let's hope they do a better job of it than Shaolin Soccer.
Zaitoichi: Wonderful storytelling and a great portrayal of the blind swordsman/masseuse/gambler. Bloody in places, though, really bloody. Not "Kill Bill" bloody but still some disturbing scenes. Despite this, it's a great story so far. The characters are all pretty deep, or at least there seems to be more to them than I've seen so far; the geisha 'sisters' are the only ones who've had a meaningful flashback so far. Still working through this one.
Shaolin Soccer: Though I didn't get it at the kiosk, it was there, and I have to mention it. Not as slapstick as Kung Fu Hustle but still very very fun. Even less blood than KFH. The last scene in the city is priceless, though it's been shown in the previews for the movie a lot.
Battle Royale: I'm gonna have to wait until I'm in the right existentialist, dystopian mood for this one.
All in all I'm very pleased with the movies I got from the kiosk. There were some movies I've been looking for (still looking for others) that were a big surprise to see there. I really hope nobody gets into a tizzy about the kiosk. Granted, there are some movies that you don't want Little Suzie and Jimmy to pick up (LA Blue Girl springs to mind) but there's many more there that are no worse (and in many cases a lot better) than this past summer's Hollywood offings. Meh,I still give it a few more weeks before it gets wiped out, sadly.
