Serenity (Spoiler-Free)
Sep. 30th, 2005 08:12 pmOh, I'm so glad I went to see it. I liked it a lot. If you have any fondness at all for the series Firefly you really must see this film. See it even if it's an evening (full price) showing if you're a real big fan, otherwise, definitely see it in matinee.
Good bits: The Visuals were great. The Serenity is the archetype for the tramp/free trader. We get to see Alliance warships for the first time, real ships, not just big hulking city-shaped, er, shapes.
Some bad things: While the pacing is good, the characterizations get a little choppy and they give a LOT of information. I'm cool with that, though. Lots of very juicy/crunchy bits. (Oh, yeah, and the mystery of the Wheadon FAP (Fast-As-Plot) Drive is revealed!) It still seems a little hectic. Lots of scenes, lots of places. Oh, yes: there are some disturbing scenes. The Reavers have a really big role in this movie, and if you recall how nervous and worried people got whenever they were mentioned, what we see of them richly warrants that fear. I don't recommend this movie for very young children, and even preteens might find it a tad disturbing. Parents are going to find in this film a lot to explain to their children about, not only what some of the 'bad guys' do, but some of the good guys.
And I think that's part of why this film -- and Firefly -- has been just plain good storytelling: the characters are complex (even River, maybe even especially River) and they have complex motivations. Granted, with Mal it's a little more confused than usual, but I still like the way the characters are.
So, final verdict without giving away spoilers: See it. See it soon. You owe it to yourself if you like a good story or like Firefly.
By the way, I did some searching and apparently there is no Firefly soundtrack. So if anyone knows where to find the main titles and the above-mentioned song The Ballad of a Man Called Jayne I'd appreciate it. Pax!
