Same old same old, so I figured I'd demonstrate to the world that I'm actually DOING something.
First up, I've been wrestling with Maya, remembering old lessons and attempting to remember how to use NURBS. Some of you might remember my brief descent into CGIese, so I'll spare you that in this one. Aside from trying to rip a skeleton out of a model's skin (... what?!) I've been attempting to model in NURBS and the following are my latest results of this curved-surface modeling tool. The object depicted is an portrayal of an FTL warship; the big thing on the back is the engine, the ring is the FTL drive, and the dish on the front is the debris shield like you'll find on the Daedalus Probe concept.

The number of jaggy lines bothers me. The rendering settings are for high tesselation and high antialiasing, so I must be doing something else wrong. Any suggestions?
And in further creativeness, I present a snippet of a story, for your perusal. Please please please, feel free to tear it apart and criticize it and tell me how I can write better. I'm also working on a rewrite of "Oceans" at some point but other things to do first.
In local news, NASCAR -- the North American Stock Car Association... Rsomething... --wants to open a speedway here on Staten Island. Make for more jobs? Increase the tourism on the Island? I don't know. On the one hand, it'll be a pretty good local boost, and it's not like it's going to be built on land that's being used for anything else. On the other hand... man, we have enough traffic problems here, and if the popularity of it down south is any indicator we'll get some pretty heavy duty traffic jams. This in addition to all the overdevelopment that they're doing here. Time was I could toodle down the street without a care in the world or a car closer than 100 feet. Now it's stop-and-go from bridge to bridge. Why are they overdeveloping when the economy is still so shaky? Mneh.
Anyway, more later, as always. Pax.
