Writing often does help. I have to wonder if it's sort of like exercise-- write regularly and feel better, as opposed to exercise regularly and feel chemically better from higher somethingsomethinglevels that honest-to-god reduce depression.

When I am a wealthy mad scientist, or just have a pet one, expect a dissertation on this topic. 'Course, it'll probably degenerate about halfway to 3/4ths into rambling about the effect of monkeys on the psychokineticgammablarb blocking properties of tinfoil hats, but that's just a risk you take with mad science.
